Kilbride, Bob

For over five decades Robert Kilbride was an integral part of the Twin Cities art community.  Kilbride was born in 1924 in Minneapolis. He studied art in the 1940’s at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, and at the Minneapolis School of Art where he was a recipient of the Ethel Morrison Vanderlipp Scholarship. From 1951 to 1980, Kilbride was a partner in the Kilbride-Bradley Art Gallery in Minneapolis. At that time the gallery was the premier exhibition space the Twin Cities showcasing local artists.  During this time he was also the author, editor and publisher of The Potboiler. This distinctively irreverent magazine began as a promotional mailer for the gallery but became a popular and widely collected publication. In 1956 Governor Orville Freeman appointed Kilbride president of the State Art Society. The Society later became the Minnesota State Arts Board.  Over the years he also taught art at several colleges in the Cities including, Minneapolis School of Art,  the University of Minnesota, the Walker Art Center, and Macalester College.  Between  1976 and 1982 Kilbride illustrated four children’s books, two cookbooks, and authored The Potboiler Quiz Book. Kilbride died in 1998 at the age of 74.
